If you have not heard of “TED” talks then you are really missing out. TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). These speeches began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. TED is an important source of new ideas. I watch TED talks on my phone and on my pad, on my computer and on my television.
What I love is TED exposes me to new and creative ideas. One of my gifts is sharing these ideas. One brilliant idea that I saw on TED is called Air-Ink! You need to know about this.
“Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to disperse because we’ve been ignorant of their value.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller
This is how Graviky Labs describes Air-Ink on their web site. Over the last 150 years, mankind has depended on burning fossil fuels directly or indirectly for their energy needs. Soot is the major byproduct of the burning of fossil fuels. Research has shown that many premature deaths are directly related to soot in the environment. Air Pollution has been one of the most conspicuous of all the problems we face today. If not captured it causes health problems, global warming, haze- billions of dollars worth of losses to governments. We capture pollution and then we turn it into Inks.
We need to learn from these guys. The world desperately needs new ideas
Daniel H. Pink in his book A Whole New Mind, points out that our society has progressed from agriculture, to the industrial age then through the information age. Daniel goes on to say that the new world will no longer be dominated by physical labor, or left brain thinking. Those activities can be outsourced to other countries and/or given to robots. The new world with be dominated by creative right brain thinking.
This takes me back to Air-Ink.
A guy is walking down the street in India and he sees a diesel generator blowing exhaust onto a wall. He notices that the wall is covered with black soot. In a moment of right brain creative genius, he connects the black soot to printer ink!
If I could capture that black stuff and refine it, we could turn it into ink for printers and painters!
That is exactly what they have done.
This demonstrates the beauty of human creativity.
The Cylons in Battlestar Galactica wanted this skill. The ability to take knowledge from a collection, a bunch, or a gaggle of information and create a new unseen result. Connecting soot on wall with solving a need. This is what you are good at!
Imagine the beauty of this discovery. We have a huge challenge created by burning fossil fuels and we can take that problem and turn it into abundance. We have billions of printers and tons of pollution. By reducing the soot we increase health and fill a need. When you print this blog to share with grandma, you can use Air-Ink!
How does that apply to you? Each of us has a gift to bring to the world. You need to be searching for your gift so you can share it. Maybe it is music, or software, or care giving, or teaching. Maybe your gift is connecting ideas into something that saves the world?
Your gift? It can be as simple as recognizing soot on a wall.
