Guilty as charged! Wow.

Growing up in a family with 4 kids I found that conversation was a combat sport. Parents had the right to talk anytime and about the subjects they chose. Kids might get involved if you were quick and clear. No false starts, no “um’s” allowed or you get talked over. This led me to the skill of listening “while crafting a reply”. I needed the reply to be quick and clear or I would lose my chance.

Now as an adult I find out that is not a great skill to have in conversation. Actually listening and then understanding takes time and energy. It also takes patience as you wait and find a pause when you get to talk. It also takes a group of people who value listening! My family might ramble on without my input but I find those that care about understanding will allow the pause and my reflection on their thoughts. I now look for listeners.
